May 9th News New!!!

  • If you're looking for a race this weekend, you can find one in Cumming, GA or McMinnville, TN.  Links are located in the upper right corner.
  • Mark your calendars for the Sprott Time Trial .
  • Bump N' Grind is coming up on us in a hurry.  Go ahead and pre-register and save yourself some cash.  The registration link is located on the right.
    • Volunteers are needed for the race.  Please consider volunteering or getting your significant other to volunteer.
  • I got a new bike in today and I have to say this thing is sweet!  Unfortunately, I could only ride for a short period of time due to the t'storms.  The name of the bike is Rider.  Rider is a small manufacturer based in Memphis, TN.  The bike came spec'd with Alpha Q parts.  If you are wanting to lighten up you bike in a hurry, go the Alpha Q route.  You can get Alpha Q at the local bike shops.  I was able to get my 58 cm bike down to 15.15 pounds (with pedals).  I was using American Classic wheels, so nothing terribly light.
  • Check out the race reports from the members of Cycle Escape.
  • May is national bike month.  Here is a great article in the Birmingham News.

May 8th News

  • The American Diabetes Association is running the 2008 Tour de Cure Triple Challenge on the legendary Four Hills Century route on May 17. Same ride, new beneficiary, more fun.  The 2008 Triple Challenge features the same epic route, minus the steeps of Keel Hollow Road .  (Though it is still an option if you feel up to the challenge.  It actually shaves a couple of miles, and it is no extra painting on our part. This year edition features a big post-ride smoked chicken and rock’n’roll throwdown at the newly relocated Bicycles Etc. party patio a quarter mile from the finish.  This is in addition to six rest stops, SAG support and the best roads in Alabama .  Is there a better way than to end a ride at a BBQ at a bike shop?  It all starts at 8 AM, May 17 at the Huntsville/Madison County Visitors Center on Church Street Register at American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure website.  Fundraising is simple and easy using the ADA website to set up your own donation link.  You get an entire month after the event to meet the minimum goal of only $150!

May 7th News

  • Volunteers are needed for the 2008 Bump 'n Grind race.  Volunteers will be needed for May 30, May 31 and June 1.  If you are interested in helping with one day or all days, please visit www.bumpngrindrace.com/volunteer.
  • The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham is organizing a Bike-to-Work Day for May 16 to promote alternative commuting options. The commission is planning a six-mile bike route that will take participants through the Birmingham city center to tour ongoing and future revitalization projects. The hour-long ride will begin at 7 a.m. at the fountain in Five Points South in Birmingham's Southside and end on First Avenue North at the Center for Regional Planning and Design. The event is sponsored by the commission and supported by the Birmingham Metropolitan Planning Organization, Birmingham Bicycle Club, GC Cycling, Vulcan Triathletes, Jefferson County Department of Health and CommuteSmart. May is National Bike Month and the League of American Bicyclists is promoting the Bike-to-Work Week from May 12 to 16, according to a news release.
  • Glad you got some good training and had some fun out at Gila. Here's a quick Sunny King update:  Darryl Seelhorst got second in the 2/3 race (AJ Meyer won it).  I got 29th in the Pro men's race. It wasn't a huge field, but it was stacked with talent -- Toyota United, Healthnet, Bissell, and California Giant Berry-Specialized all had their "A" teams (Ivan Dominguez, Hilton Clarke, Kirk O'Bee, Dominique Rollin. Rock Racing had a couple guys there, too, including this year's Athens Twilight winner, Rashaan Bahati. I managed to escape off the front of the field with 12 laps to go and stayed off for about 4 or 5 laps. I bridged up to Rashaan Bahati but he had been off for several more laps than me so he was cooked by the time I caught him. There wasn't any hope for me to stay off by myself and so one lap later I got caught. I got 32nd in roswell against basically the same field -- except Freddie Rodriguez was a surprise last minute entry at the Roswell race.

May 6th News

  • I'm back from New Mexico.  What a trip.  The trip wasn't a total waste.  I managed to get 12 hours of training at 6,000 feet and above.  I also drove the team car to support Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, AL).  Michael was "rolling".  He posted a time in the time trial that was beaten only by professional riders.  On the hardest stage, Mike was the only non-pro to be in the lead group.  He finished 15th overall.  The only people ahead of him were professionals.
    • When driving the team car (Volvo) on a closed course, I took full advantage of the opportunity.  I dropped back to make sure Sam Silvey was o.k. on the category 1 climb that went over 7,000 feet.  After giving Sam some bottles, I had to make it up to Mike's group.  The road was that out of a commercial.  Straight shot, with wide curves, the "o.k." form the police and a closed course with no chance of vehicular traffic.  So, I didn what any one else would have done-I got the Volvo up to 90 mph and let it rip.  That alone salvaged the trip and made up for getting sick on day 1.
  • Jamie Oliver has set up an online forum for us to communicate with each other.  Bama Bike Chat.  There are several topics you can post under.  You can arrange training, carpools, etc.
  • I've been out of the loop for the past 8 days.  Fill me in on what happened at Anniston, etc.  travis@travissherman.com
  • Put the Tour of the Gila on your 2009 "road trip" calendar.  This is a great event for all categories.  The scenery is amazing, I can't even explain how amazing it is.  You have to go.  The town will provide host housing for you and all the races leave from the town.  The racing is hard, but worth the trip.  I'm leaving the link for Gila up so that you can have an entire year to think about it.

April 30th News

  • I apologize for the delay in getting the site updated.  I'm in Silver City, NM.  Unfortunately, my race was over before it began.  The race went something like this:  Drive 20 hours to New Mexico.  Wake up at 3:30 on race day with a headache, allergies, vomiting, cold sweats, etc.  I attempted to put on my race kit, but I was so weak that doing 100 mile race with nearly 8,000 feet of climing and sustained winds of 40 mph was out of the question.  Oh well, so much for my plan of getting 5 days of hard racing in against some of the top riders in the country.

April 28th News

  • I need some action photos and news.  Please send some my way.
  • I'll be heading to New Mexico to race the Tour of the Gila.  This will be a 5 day, 400 mile stage race.  I'm not sure what my internet status will be, so updates may be hit or miss.
  • Several riders from Alabama went over for the Mississippi Gran Prix.  Here are some photos.
  • If you didn't make it over to Georgia to catch the Tour de Georgia, here are some photos taken by Trish Albert.  Trish operatetes www.sadlebred.com.
  • Good luck to all of your racing the Sunny King Criterium this weekend.

April 26th News

  • Darrell O'Quinn (BooKoo) is the number 1 ranked cat 3 in America for the stage race.
  • The urban sprawl continues and another riding area is targeted for elimination.  Another area is targeted for "McMansions", shopping centers, traffic jams and all the other stuff that comes with 19,000 plus homes.  Goodby Westover.  Details
  • Do you want me to show you and your team some "love"?  Then send me a photo.  I can't post what I don't have.
  • The Medplan Cycling Team press release
  • Sunny King, a.k.a. "Anniston Criterium", news.  Confirmed rider list for the Pro men and women.  There is going to be some "heat" at this year's race.
  • A 30 second cycling safety video.
  • Let gas prices go higher!  If it takes $50 to fill up a tank, then people would rethink that umpteenth trip to the mini mall that day.  The benefit would be fewer cars on the road!  This is what the local mall would look like.
  • I will be flying out to Portland, OR on May 11th for the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic.  This will be six days of butt kicking I will be receiving.  Does anyone have a hardcase bike carrier I could borrow for the week?  Email me.  If I don't immediately respond, it's because I am heading out to Silver City, NM for the Tour of the Gila.  This will be a five day butt kicking I will be on the receiving end of.  I'm not sure what my internet situation will be while I'm there.

April 23rd News

  • It's back!  The 2008 Pepper Place Criterium.
  • Come out to New Hope, AL this Saturday, September 26 for the spectacular Family Services Center ‘Metric – Plus’ Spring Fling.  The routes are marked and we will go out of our way to brag that this is one of the prettiest rides in the state.  The route travels some ‘undiscovered’ roads not seen on many club rides or any organized rides.  We are still high on paint fumes from marking the SIX distance options:  6-mile Family Ride, 25, 37, 45 64 and 72 miles.  There is something for everyone this Saturday.  All routes get continuous rollers.  The longest rides go up Skyline Mountain on a 2.5 mile climb and drop on a crazy switchback descent.  This is good training for the upcoming Three-State and Cheaha Centuries.  The ride is fully supported with three rest stops, t-shirts, door prizes and a post-ride pizza feast.  Ride starts at 8 AM in New Hope , AL Check out the details at the FSC web site, or register directly at Active.com
  • Bike Link's rider's club "Team Green" will have a group at the Tour de Cure this Sat, April 26th.  Go to www.diabetes.org/tour  to register for this event.  Join us at the Pepper Place and support the fight against diabetes.  Thanks from Bike Link and Team Green. www.bikelinkbham.com

  • Well, after at least 20,000 miles of being abused on the road, on dirt roads, on the trainer, in the rain, in the humidity; I have finally retired my shoes.  Notice the hole and the velcro that was glued to the side of the shoe to keep the shoes going.  Hey, you find a cleat position and you'll do what you can do to avoid changing it.  The shoes served me well, but it's time to move on.  Now, I can be stylin' and fashionable like Big George Hincapie and Tornado Tom Boonen!

  • Submitted by a reader of the site:  This just in,ICS-Chain Reaction Team member Dr  Steve George from Alex City competing in the Senior Olympic Games in the 50-54 age group won 1 Gold medal on Saturday April 4 and 3 more Gold medals on Sunday April 6,2008 to  sweep the events in the 50-54 yr mens group!  See report below.    The first event on Sat was a 40K Road Race held in the Pike Community Area east of Montgomery. The event was scheduled for 9 am , but was rain delayed. We finally started @3;15.There were @45 riders ,men and women of all ages who started.Only 6-8 riders remained in the lead group with @ 2 miles to go.With 200 meters to go , a sprint ensued . I was in position to contest the sprint on the left side of the group when I was hit hard by a rider trying to create space and come through.A terrific wobble ensued ,I stayed off the pavement to finish 8TH overall but first in my age group! The time was 1 hr,3min.    The ITT was next on Sunday am 9 am.  The first ITT was a 5 K.Gunter Industrial park, what a bumpy road!I went off 4th on the day and posted a time of7:54.It was the best time off the day until near the end of the day when a 55 yr old from Bham posted a 7:40(He rides bikes for a living)I was 2nd overall on the day and 1st again in my age group.  The next event was a 10 K,2 bumpy windy laps.I posted the best time of the day at 15:44 and took first in my age group! The last race of the weekend was a circuit race ,20 K , 4 bumpy laps.Only @ 20 riders stayed around for the 12:30 start. I stayed up in the lead group of 6 hardly ever pulling, waiting for the last lap. With the last curve in sight, the pace quickened @600m to the finish. At @ 200 m ,I tried to move right for the shortest line to the finish. The group moved and blocked me .I wanted to win even though I was tired.I had one option ; go left and go fast! I did a nd I dropped the group to solo in across the finish!!! Just me and the finish line!So that's how you do it! 1st overall and 1st in the 50-54 yr goup!time was 35min 20 sec,I won my first race!  A big thanks to Darren for coming out Sun to help with ITT starts and to pre-ride the course with me. He knows every bump in the road and where to cross the train tracks. What a team mate! Steve George

April 8th News

  • Well, after six weeks of racing in Alabama, it's time to go out of state and race.  The Georgia Cup Chattanooga race is this weekend.  You can do a time trial, criterium and a road race.  I believe the road course has been changed to a flatter course (not the Raccoon Mtn course).  So, take the family, race your bike, visit the Aquarium and go out for a nice dinner. www.georgiacup.com
  • The Anniston Criterium is coming up soon.  Go ahead and register.  Some of the fields filled up last year.  Info

  • BUMP invites you to their Annual Spring Social.  The social will be held on April 19th at the Dogwood Pavillion at Oak Mountain.  There will be a group ride from the South Trailhead parking lot at 9 a.m. and lunch at noon.  www.bump.org for more information.
  • Sunday featured the Cuba Challenge in Cubua, Alabama.  The course is deceptively challenging with long gradual uphills and short steep leg busters.  If you missed the spring race, check back in the summer for the Meridian Omnium.  You'll get to race on the same road course.  The only difference will be the temperature.
  • April 12th is the first annual C.O.G.S. metric century.  The ride will take you on the back roads of Sylacauga and Talledega County.  The proceeds from the event will go toward maintainance of the brand new U.S.F.S. built mountainbike trail.

Photos and Results from the Tour de Tuscaloosa

  • From a concerned participant of the Tuesday Worlds (Birmingham): I know that you have no control over how the riders ride on Tuesday nights but the Tuesday night ride is getting some bad "buzz" and you have a voice through your website. It's been stated that these riders are running red lights and not following traffics rules/laws. This ride is a great challenge for Birmingham riders and I sure would hate to see riders killed over trying to "win" a training ride. If we as fellow cyclist don't encourage strict safety on these rides someone will get severely hurt. If we don't address this the cops will be on the prowl and start shutting down these rides for safety reasons. Thanks, (name withheld on this copy and paste job).

April 2nd News

  • I hope you didn't get "April Fooled" too badly yesterday.
  • If you have any race reports, photos, etc from Tuscaloosa (or other events) please send them to me and I'll post the information on the site.
  • I want to create a listing of the "weekday world championships" and other rides that go on in other parts of Alabama.  Please email me so that I can post these weekly training rides.

April 1st News

  • This is the best news a cyclist could hear!  The Alabama Legislator has just passed a law that will require all state funded roadways to include at least a 3 foot bike lane on each side of the road!  The lane must be free of obstruction, ie. not a place for cars to pull off on the side of the road!  Story.
  • The Tour de Tuscaloosa was a resounding success.  Despite James Spann's best efforts to bring thunderstorms and the all nighter pulled by Jerry Tracy (complete with the I haven't slept in 48 hours look), the weather was warm and rain free!  The criterium was challenging and free of the rougue car on the course.  The road race was well marshalled and well patrolled.
  • The Alabama racing scene continues this Sunday with a deceptively challenging road race in Cuba, AL.  Cuba is located west of Tuscaloosa.  Each category will race approximately 83 miles and climb 6,600 feet.  There are no real hard climbs (one short somewhat steep hill) to speak of.  The course just kind of goes up the whole time.  The course is rideable in the big ring.
    • If you want a hardcore weekend, you can do this.  Go to Gainesville, GA (outside of Atlanta) and do the road race that starts at 11 c.s.t.  Then, head to Cuba for the road race on Sunday.  The Gainesville link is located on the right.
  • I'd like to thank all of you for looking at the site.  The site broke its previous record for visits.  You visited the site over 14,000 times in the month of March!  Thank you!

March 30th News

  • The forecasted rain stayed away from the Tour de Tuscaloosa criterium.  We were greated with a sunny sky, humidity and warm weather!  The same is on tap for Sunday's road race.
    • There is a $3 dollar per person fee for entry into the park.  There is no way around this, since the staging is inside the park.

March 29th News

  • Here is a little humor with your morning coffee.
  • There are only a few days remaining in March.  This means, there are only a few more days remaining in Bike Link's "March is for Women" promotion.  Swing by and check out the savings.

March 28th News

  • The weather is looking good for the Tour of Tuscaloosa.  The temp will be in the 70s and there is a slight chance of rain.  Hopefully we'll have the luck with the weather that we had at the Hoover Crit (assuming it does rain).
  • The category 5 road race is full for Tuscaloosa.  There are still some slots available for the category 5 crit.
  • Darell O'quinn's wife, Kristina, will be selling her "K Bars" at the races.  Kristina's "K Bars" are all natural, moist (not dry) and edible while riding.  I believe she is selling 5 bars for $5.  Be on the look out and take advantage of these super energy bars.  This is the only legal way to carry a k-bar in your pocket during a race and stab your competition in the legs.
  • Looking for a training ride?  Go here:

March 27th News

  • Attention all category 5 racers.  The category 5 field is filling up (or maybe filled) for the Tour de Tuscaloosa.  If you haven not registered, you may want to do that sooner rather than later.  The race link is located on the right.
  • Calling all cycling clubs.  If you have club news, events, weekly training rides, etc., please email me and I'll post the information on the site.
  • Too many events to choose from.  Story
  • It appears that another place has been targeted.  Coosa Avenue, a.k.a. "Jerry Springer", is closed due to construction on the property adjacent to the road.  On the bright side, at least it's a high school being constructed-a job training center for the Bass Pro Shop located across the street (kidding).

March 25th News

  • Weather, stay warm, please!  Spring drives me crazy.  It's 70, 75 or 80 one day.  Then, boom!  It's 50.  Not that 50 is cold and some people would be wearing shorts when it's 50, but don't tease with the warm weather.  Any way, this cool snap got me wondering what was up at the Bama Cross site.  Check it out and see Brent's latest postings.  www.bamacross.com
  • The weather is looking warm for the Tour de Tuscaloosa this weekend.  If you're not the racing type, then don't forget about the "Woody" in Anniston this Saturday.  Or, if you're not the criterium racing type, but don't mind road races, then do the "Woody" on Saturday and the Tour de Tuscaloosa road race on Sunday.  Get about 150-70 miles in two days!
    • Check out the "Upcoming Events" page for a listing of all the rides and races.  If I missed something, please let me know.
  • From Stuart Lamp:  I would like to encourage the riders to send a "Thank You" note to the people at the Barber Motorsports Facility for their donation of the track for the race this past weekend.  It is not very often that a race track that costs, from what I was told, $16,000 a day to rent is donated for free.  Everyone can send an email to Heather Hinton at e-mail .
  • To make it easier on you to find event information for races in Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi, I've posted links to all of the local associations and or race promoter sites in each state.  You can find this information on the left side of the site.  I've posted individual race information on the right side of the site.  The left side will be permanent links.  The right side will change periodically as new races come up and old races have come and gone.

March 24th News

  • The University of Alabama Cycling Team has a new website.
  • There will be a road cycling bike camp in the north Georgia mountains May 17-18.  Details.
  • The Critical Mass (Birmingham) ride will be on March 28th at 6 p.m.  This is a ride to raise awareness for our rights to ride on public roads as well as the need for adequate space on roads to safely ride.

March 23rd News

  • Happy Easter everyone!
  • The Ride to Live Road Race was a screaming success.  Warm weather was on the menu this year.  Last year, we were treated to 35 degree temperatures and wind.  This year, perfect.  The early numbers prove this.  Jerry said there were about 300 participants!  I truly hope this event continues to be a yearly event on the race calendar and continues to grow.
    • I'll have results linked as soon as thy become available
    • If you have any photos of the races, please send a few my way.
  • Next up on the "Tour de Alabama" race schedule is the Tour de Tuscaloosa.  This race is well organized and the race is fun to ride in.  The criterium is challenging, but fun.  The road race course has a little something for every riding style.  The course features a small climb, rolling hills, flat roads and some windy sections.
  • Here is a newspaper article that is in the Huntsville Times about the Camelback.

March 21st News

  • Click here for an "e-coupon" to Billy's Bar and Grill.  The coupon is good for the origninal location in English Village and the coupon is good for the brand new location near Liberty Park.  The new location is only miles from the Barber's Motorsports Track.  Stop by after your race.

  • Eighth Annual Ride of Love, Saturday, May 17, 2008, benefiting Camp Smile-A-Mile, a year round program for children in Alabama with cancer.  A very unique ride since you don't just ride for the cause you get to go to the campsite and meet the children and families that you have ridden for!!  Cost:  $20 entry fee and each cyclist must raise a minimum of $250 (the cost of Camp Smile-A-Mile to send a child to weeklong camp).   The Ride of Love is a 150 mile group bicycle ride from Tuscaloosa, AL to the Camp Smile-A-Mile Campsite in Alexander City, AL We leave from the IHOP in Tuscaloosa at 6 a.m. and travel through 6 different counties (Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Elmore) and arrive at the campsite by 6 p.m.  This is a group ride that takes 10-12 hours to complete and maintains a pace of approx. 16 mph.  We have a lead rider and a sweep rider to maintain the pace and group. Once we arrive at Camp Smile-A-Mile, we are greeted by the cheers of the children and families that we have ridden and raised money for.  We present the staff of Camp Smile-A-Mile with the "BIG CHECK" and then head off to the showers and then dinner with the children.  In 2007, we had 73 cyclists to participate and raised over $120,000 for Camp Smile-A-Mile.  This year's goal is to have 80 cyclists and raise over $125,000-please join me for this year's ride!!  For more information visit www.campsam.org/rideoflove.asp or call Stephanie Wilkins at 205-323-8427.

  • Please allow me this shameless plug.  The coaching side of my website had a terrific weekend.  I had two athletes, Lennie Moon and Wes Douglas, win their respective races.  They not only won, but they both won impressively.  Steve Murray also had a great weekend in Perry, Georgia.  He finished on the podium in several of the races and took a few of the "Most Aggressive Rider" points.  This continues the successes of 2007 where several of my athletes won races, upgraded or simply realized personal progresses that make the sport more enjoyable.
    • If you'd like to add structure to your training and a purpose to your training, I'm available to help.  I have coaching plans that are interactive and I have training plans that will give you a daily workout to do.  Email me for details.

  • I'll post this next week (again), but I'll mention it now.  The Tuesday Worlds (Birmingham) start time had been pushed back 15 minutes (or so I thought) from the previous year's start times.  This means rollong out of Homewood Cycles at 5:30 and proceeding along the traditional route and going by the traditional pickup points.  This 15 minute delay allows traffic to die down a bit more and allows more people to get to the ride.  The ride times should be stuck to so that we can have a quality ride.  If the times aren't adhered to, then what's the point of having the ride?  People showed up yesterday, only to find out they were 15 minutes off the back.
  • March online rider challenge.

March 16th News

  • The Spokes for Strokes "criterium" was, in my opinion, a huge success.  When you hear about a criterium being held at a school, the initial vision is a parking lot with cones and ten turns around the little Crape Myrtles in the medians.  This course was different.  The course was top notch.  Smooth pavement, wide roads, wind and a hill made for a great course-even in the rain.   For the most part the weather cooperated.  The first two races were held in the rain, but the rest of the day was mostly sunny and very windy.  I'll have results posted and pictures posted as soon as they become available.
    • Don't forget about the Spokes for Strokes Century ride today.  8:30 a.m. from the Cahaba Cycles new Trussville location.
